Having a home gym can sometimes be very handy, but it can also be a lot of work. It really depends on the type of person you are. I personally and a self conscious person so I prefer my home gym. I don’t weight train really so I don’t need a spotter. I have a weight set and treadmill. I also have things like Zumba and Yoga too. I find I am better able to focus on my workout and not all the people around me.
A home gym can be expensive up front though. You have to buy all the equipment. Even if you get it used it can get pricey. You also don’t get those amenities that some gym memberships offer like saunas or steam rooms. You also have to remember to clean the equipment.
On the bright side of a home gym it doesn’t matter what you wear. It is open 24/7. The commute there costs gas and time off your workout (I’m personally a home body so I don’t generally end up going). You don’t have to wait for any equipment. You can also get kids into fitness which is important.
A gym membership is less money upfront, but in the long run can be more. If you are weight training it’s better to go to a gym because there is people to spot you. There is also lots of space and tons of different kinds of equipment. If you go doing a strange time there won’t be many people at the gym so the amount of people shouldn’t distract you.
So, at the end of the day it really is up to you. If you are just going through a phase get a gym membership. If you are going to be doing it long term and won’t be doing weight training get a Home gym.
